Key Benefits of Dragon Boat Paddling for Survivors

  • Origins of the Movement
The concept was founded in 1996 by Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician in Vancouver, BC. He Physical Rehabilitation & Strength: Contrary to old beliefs that suggested avoiding upper-body exercise, paddling is a safe, effective workout that builds strength in the upper and lower body, improves stamina, and helps manage lymphedema.
  • Mental & Emotional Wellness: Team members often describe it as a “floating support group” that helps reduce the isolation, fear, and loneliness often associated with cancer. It promotes camaraderie, joy, and a sense of empowerment, helping survivors regain control of their lives.
  • Community and Support: Survivors connect over shared experiences, fostering deep friendships and a strong, supportive network of peers who understand the cancer journey.
  • Active Recovery: Many survivors report feeling stronger after joining a team than they did before their diagnosis, using the sport as a way to celebrate life and stay active. aimed to prove that intense upper-body exercise, if managed properly, would not worsen lymphedema and could actually provide physical and mental benefits to breast cancer survivors.
